grateful

This morning I decided to make this week one of thanks & gratitude.

• Instead of complaining about how early my alarm goes off, I will be thankful I have a warm bed to sleep in.

• Instead of whining about sore muscles & the drill sergeant in my 6:00 am workout class, I will be thankful I can participate & am not in a wheelchair.

• Instead of getting frustrated with my huge ‘to-do’ list at work, I will be thankful I HAVE a to-do list and a job that pays.

• Instead of complaining about the cold & snow, I will be grateful for the incredibly beautiful winter weather we’ve had this year.

There are a million things we could complain about in a day, but there are 5 million things we could be thankful for instead! As my son gets closer to an age of comprehending things, I realize I need to be careful with my words & attitude. I want him to grow up in a thankful home, not a complaining one. There is enough negativity out there, he doesn’t need to be hearing it from me too. Blessings to you all, happy Monday, & cheers to a week of thanks!

Dillon’s Senior Session

Dillon is such a nice young man. Really all the children/kids/seniors I photograph are nice, but Dillon was so polite & courteous paired with a great sense of humor, it made him stand out. Admittedly, senior boys don’t love taking pictures for an extended period of time (shocking, I know), but Dillon never complained or showed even the slightest annoyance with me as I snapped away…and snapped….and snapped. I trucked him all over the place & we got some great images! Once again, my job was made fun & easy by a client with a great smile & personality…seriously, my clients are THE BEST!

R Family

I grew up in the small town of Platte (two hours west of SF for those who aren’t familiar). And by small, I mean 1300 people, more churches than bars, and a column in the newspaper about who visited who’s house on Saturday (I’m not kidding). There were so many great things about growing up there, but by far the best part was the people. It’s a town that feels like a big family & no matter how long it’s been since I visited, everyone is just as friendly and just as interested in how I’m doing. I have a lot of faithful clients there & I cannot begin to express how thankful I am for ALL of them! They drive two hours to see me & are always SO fun to work with. They are the people who got me started in this business & were patient with me as I developed my craft. Everyone needs to start somewhere & everyone needs those few people to just give them that chance. I’m so thankful for my Platte “family” and the chance they gave me. Here is another beautiful family from my sweet little hometown, thank you R family for coming to see me, I had so much fun with you!

A & H

These girls are too sweet for words! The first thing little Miss H says to me when we get to the location is “I pretty!” LOL and she IS pretty! So is her older sister, they both are going to be heartbreakers for sure! Oh & they have a little brother or sister due to arrive this spring (I think it’s a boy but I’ve been 0-3 with gender guesses so far this year so it’s probably a girl). Anyway, we had lots of fun even though it was FREEZING outside, seriously, it was so chilly! The girls did great though & didn’t complain once. Can’t wait to meet the new little addition this spring!

The never-ending dilemma of what to wear…

One of the most common questions I get asked before a session is “what should we wear?” This can become a bit of a stress issue for mom as she tries to coordinate the entire family, then try to find something for herself. But never fear, I’m here to help with some tips, inspirations & examples!

1. First things first, we’ve all done the matchy-matchy thing, so let’s put it on a shelf next to our big ratted bangs & stone-washed jeans.

2. Avoid too much white. You know the saying “the camera adds 10 lbs?” Well white can have the same effect when there is too much of it (eek!) so use it sparingly.

3. Think about what would look good above your sofa. Ultimately these outfits will be hanging as a wall portrait on YOUR walls, so think of your outfits as art. If you wouldn’t buy a painting with bold patterns & bright colors to hang in your home, you probably shouldn’t choose that brightly colored sundress with the matching bright shoes, bright hat, bright belt…you get the idea.

4. Coordinating is KEY. This is tricky for some people but it doesn’t have to be, there are simple tricks to help you execute it well. An easy way to find inspiration for outfits (especially for kids) is simply by going to your favorite kids clothing websites. Almost every one will have a boy’s “version” of an outfit that coordinates with a girl’s, or multiple boy’s outfits shown in the same color palette. Great examples are Gap or Old Navy….they both come out with a new batch of clothes each season with a specific look & color palette for that season’s designs. I’ve also started “pinning” some of my favorite outfit combos & ideas on my Pinterest page for clients to use as an easy reference, follow me to see them all (if you need an invite, let me know & I’ll send you one)!

5. Layers & Accessories! Just b/c you found four v-neck sweaters in the right sizes that happen to coordinate in color doesn’t mean you should ALL be wearing v-neck sweaters. By layering & adding accessories you can create different looks for each individual in your family instead of looking like you all fell out of a cookie cutter & got frosted in a different shade of blue. Use jackets, leggings, boots, coats, hats, headbands, belts…the combinations are seriously endless! Again, check out my Pinterest page for GREAT examples of using layers & accessories to create unique but coordinating looks!

6. Pinterest. Yeah, I guess I could have avoided writing a majority of this post by simply referring you all to Pinterest. Greatest. Site. Ever.

See how easy it can be? With just a little planning, research & the fabulousness of Pinterest (which by the way spell check doesn’t recognize as a word…silly), you can have a killer ensemble that looks effortless! Happy shopping!
